Applications for Volunteers on the 2013 Volunteer Programme are now closed. See here for information on the Coordinator Role.

Welcome to the Suas Volunteer Programme! These pages provide an overview of the Volunteer Programme: what it’s about, who’s involved, the work you will be doing and the challenges you may face. If you are thinking of applying, we hope that these pages will give you a sense of whether or not the Programme is right for you.

The Suas Volunteer Programme provides an opportunity to work in India for 10 weeks; with 9 weeks volunteering in a community-based school or educational project and one week of workshops exploring development issues.  The Programme will give you the opportunity to develop your professional skills, work in a team and learn about issues affecting our interconnected world.

Since 2002, 759 Suas Volunteers have worked with our overseas Partners; the dedication of previous participants has enabled the continuation and development of the Programme. Today, the Volunteer Programme continues to evolve; building upon the success of previous years and responding to the ongoing challenges faced by each partner organisation.

Supporting Education in Our Partner Schools

The Suas Volunteer Programme is a professional work placement; it is demanding, challenging and rewarding. Volunteers work with local teachers for an average of 40 hours per week: assisting with curricular development and activities, providing one-to-one support to children, producing Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) and supplying IT support.  Volunteers are also involved in a number of extra-curricular activities, including: summer camps, arts and crafts, football, rugby, hurling and drama.

Creating Networks of Young People to Make a Difference

The Programme is a way to meet like-minded individuals and work towards change, both in Ireland and overseas. It's about leadership and serving the needs of others. The Programme facilitates the creation of a network of young people; many of whom make far-reaching contributions to their local communities following their placement. Along with the 9 week work placement, the Programme also includes “Global Perspectives” – a learning strand where Volunteers explore issues of development, including a week-long workshop in-country.

Being Part of our Overseas Partnership Model

The Volunteer Programme is part of the wider service provided by Suas to our overseas Partners; the Programme builds trust and respect, and helps us work together to make a real difference.

A Note on Kenya

Unfortunately, due to increased security concerns in Kenya, Suas Volunteers will not be travelling to Kenya in 2013. We will be expanding our programme of work in India in 2013, with the creation of two new placements.
